I have been browsing boards, to find heavily modified boards. What are some of the most decked out modded boards around? Are there any that do not even resemble the software they are using? (like major bbs, synchronet, mystic, you get the ideah lol)

I know you've been by before, but to those who haven't futureland.today is VERY CUSTOMIZED. Maybe the most customized Synchronet BBS right now - I've gotten props from some tough BBS customers I won't name, but if you haven't been by, you're missing out!

Just spent some time there, and yeah, it's very customized, but not better. I found it rather tedious navigating the screens of "icons", particularly in the Forums and News Reader sections. Not to mention that the descriptions are heavily abbreviated for lack of space, so you're not always sure what your going into. a list mode is definitely needed.

I have not customized my entire BBS shell, but I am very proud of my IGS login shell and sequence at Guardian of Forever BBS -- guardian.synchro.net.

To use it you have to be using an Atari ST (real or emulated) with a recent version of the "Instant Graphics and Sound" software.

Or you can watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ymii4HSuqt0

I have also made a proof-of-concept of a main menu based on the ST: TMP / Wrath of Khan tactical graphics, but this is a demo on my BBS right now, not the actual menu.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToCZE8bRxuw

(My BBS also has a custom Atari ST VT-52 login sequence, as well as a lot of custom ANSI demos)

makes me think of the bottom line of the user interface for Turbo Vision (from things like Turbo Pascal, DOS Navigator, etc) .. you don't really have a tooltip option for a terminal program so they just displayed that sort of
information on the bottom line of the screen.

"better" is certainly subjective, but you do hit the nail on the head in some ways as to some challenges. running an icon driven board where the icons are 12 x 6 means I have to cut things off at 12 characters, it's not really a problem when I have time and skill to draw a nice icon or go in there and use some human judgment on what to label something, but there are times when I import a lot of stuff, and forums and RSS feeds are good examples of that. I don't consider myself an ANSI artist, more of a coder so on one hand it's great when I can add a new network or door game, on the otherhand i've got to get icons and labels for these things. there are over 5000 RSS feeds being fed through there - they have semi-dynamic icons, but yeah, easy to get lost in there, at least first time (once you recognize the icons like me, you can be in a stupor and find your way around -> we've tested it)

To me, it's more curation than design, but yeah, I acknowledge the clunkiness there and I'd like to reach more of a "curation" phase than "development" (I gotta stop adding stuff - i wish i had a cosysop - i'll be done soon, i keep telling myself). List mode can be a thing for another rewrite, this things held together with rubber bands and chewing gum lol

i think there's definitely things you probably missed in your session - even when you go idle interesting things happens, but i mean it's fair to come to the conclusion it's not "better" at face value 2 seconds in if traditional BBS's interfaces are your jam - which is probably a lot of people here. me personally, i'm totally happy how it's turned out though myself for whatever reasons.

sometimes i use arrows to get around, sometimes i use typeahead mode, but mostly i just use my mouse and slouch way back. sometimes i just trip out off the screensavers and fall out of my chair. maybe it's just a curiosity for some, but i can loiter here endlessly. it's designed for loitering, really - i guess in my BBS heyday, I'd loiter on multi-line boards for hours - that's the nostalgia goal for me, loitering on the fringes of cyberspace with gifted delinquents, it's more abstract. :)
